Located forty minutes South of Mount Rushmore Hot Springs is one of the warmest places in South Dakota with an annual mean temperature of 48.6 °F (9.2 °C). The town of Hot Springs was founded as a frontier health spa in 1890 capitalizing on the warm springs mineral waters rising in Fall River Canyon. Evans Plunge, was built in 1890 utilizing the naturally warm 87 °F (31 °C) spring water.

The town is home to many attractions of the southern Black Hills, particularly Evans Plunge, the Mammoth Site, Wind Cave, Angostura Recreation Area and thousands of acres of unrestricted National Forest.
